Ia ora na!
My wife and I are celebrating three milestone events over the next nine months. After much deliberation on how to mark the occasions, we decided on a trip to Bora Bora. (Considering that our final choices were either throwing ourselves a party at a local VFW post and paying for friends and relatives to come dine and imbibe at our expense, or taking a vacation somewhere we never envisioned ourselves going to, Bora Bora was an easy, no-brainer choice! And probably less expensive in the long run.)
Our intrepid nature (or maybe it was our total naiveté) led us to planning and making all reservations on our own. After much research, discussion, review reading, and finger crossing, we decided to stay at the Le Meridien.
And what a choice it was!!! It was one of the best choices we have ever made in our lives.
Doing everything ourselves, of course, led to more than a few questions on our part. Every email we sent was responded to in a friendly, helpful, timely manner, no matter how inane the question or challenging a change we asked for. If a person we were corresponding with didn’t have the answer, they passed it on to someone who did. We were never left hanging for a valid reply.
This was just a prelude, though, to experiencing Le Meridien’s dedication to customer service in person. It is on display every day (we were there 7) and with everyone we came in contact with. From the cheery lyrical ia ora na greetings to the bountiful māuruuru thank you’s, Le Meridien is built on providing a superior customer experience.
And it begins the moment you walk up to its ‘booth’ in the Bora Bora airport, where you are greeted, literally, with open arms and a fresh floral lei. ‘V’, the lady that greeted us (we don’t want to use names, as we will probably unintentionally and regrettably forget someone; everyone was fantastic), set the tone and was the epitome of someone going out of her way to solve a problem a guest was having. My, I mean his, belt broke going through security in Papeete, leaving his pants perilously close at times to becoming anklets. “V” took it upon herself to check the airport gift shop to see if they had belts, and when finding out they didn’t, fashioned one out of wrapping ribbon. I, I mean he, was very thankful for her proactive efforts as were hundreds of passengers in the area at the time.
The resort itself is beautiful! We had read all of the descriptions and had seen the photos – best view of Mt. Otemanu, prestigious turtle sanctuary, gorgeous white-sand beaches, plenty of beach/water activities, crystal-clear blue water – but none of it did justice to reality. It was gorgeous!!! If anything it outperformed the hype.
Our bungalow was clean and well supplied with toiletries every day, our view was stunning (as was everyone’s!), and though we were in the second bungalow from the end of the wharf, our walk to the pools, beach, restaurants was only about 10 minutes.
The food was excellent and plentiful. While my wife is somewhat of a foodie and enjoyed her many choices, I am a Midwestern meat and potatoes guy and had no problem finding something to eat every day. The morning buffet is to die for. Dinner selections are varied, and well prepared and presented. And while the breakfast buffet and dinner are enough to make it through the day, the lunch menu is worth checking out. The staff in each restaurant is friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable.
Other amenities include: a small gift shop; pearl jewelry store with a large selection of sizes and shapes; beach hut filled with canoes, kayaks, paddle boards – all free; world-renowned turtle sanctuary, which we were not overly interested in, but totally wowed when we saw it and were able to feed the rehabilitating turtles; well maintained, beautiful, tropical grounds/landscaping; a very accommodating policy of allowing guests to use the facilities prior to check-in and after check-out; and a concierge group that invest themselves in making sure you enjoy yourself and have a memorable time.
To find anything to complain about at Le Meridien Bora Bora, one would have to dig deep and be extremely nitpicky. It is all the hype and much more!
